When I started Ottomatic Threads five years ago, it was to solve an issue I had been dealing with my entire life: a severe lack of clothing for women that fit correctly and performed in the outdoors. So much of building this brand was about solving issues that my friends, family, and myself had encountered, but it grew so far beyond that. Throughout the years, I have had the opportunity to meet dozens upon dozens of women who were gracious in sharing their experiences with outdoor apparel with me. We all had the same issue: terrible fit and crappy fabrics that didn’t allow us to enjoy the outdoors in the same capacity our brothers, husbands, boyfriends, etc. could.
A lot of apparel that exists now is either for athleisure wear or hardcore outdoor pursuits; very rarely can you find something in the middle that performs, but allows you to enjoy the outdoors at a variety of levels. May it be taking your dog on a sunrise walk, fishing with your kids, or joining your friends for a backpacking trip- we seek to provide practical, but fun, basic pieces for outdoor enjoyment.
Our new horizon base layers that we introduced in 2022 were a turning point for us as a company. Created out of frustration with a lack of opaque non-wool base layers for various sizes, this design was a game-changer. We tossed all former patterns aside and developed these from scratch, using the fit comments and questions we get through reviews and social media (yes, we read EVERYTHING). The fit was a hit. The fabric was a hit. The motion strips? Also a hit. These base layers solved a problem I have been trying to figure out for years.
It was at this point that I felt the name and identity of Ottomatic Threads no longer fit and I started pondering alternatives. A brand that was built upon my own nickname didn’t make any sense when the brand was now about so many other people. Trekalla is a name I made up that incorporates our journey (trek) to provide every body (all) with apparel that allows women to adventure as they see fit.
This past year I closed our microfactory so I could move across the country with my family and focus solely on building this brand to be what I know it is: an apparel brand that creates size inclusive and sustainable apparel for as many body types as possible. We aren’t a fashion brand. We aren’t an Everest-climbing level outdoor apparel brand. We are trekALLa: an apparel brand for the everyday adventurer and for people who just want to enjoy being outside.
